Introduction

Pretoria is often referred to as the "The Jacaranda City", due to the high number of Jacaranda trees that are planted in Pretoria and its surrounds. It is the legislative capital of the country and as such there is lots of history associated with the city. The 38km² can be found between the city of Pretoria and OR Tambo (Johannesburg) International Airport and you may catch a glimpse of zebra, cheetah, rhino, various buck and over 300 bird species if you decide to take a tour or hike of the area.

4 - Stamp Museum

Maybe not one for the everyone, but if you or one of your kids loves stamps then The Stamp Museum makes for an interesting way to spend an hour or two. Admission is free and the museum is home to over 500,000 stamps, both of local (South African) origin, as well as international stamps. If you love stamps and want to take a look at a few that you'll probably never get another chance to see, be sure to take a trip to the Stamp Museum. 5 - Cullinan Diamond Mine

The Cullinan Diamond Mine is the place where the world's largest diamond was found, the Cullinan Diamond, which was 3106 carats before it was cut. You can do both an above ground, or underground tour of the mine and view rough diamonds, cutting and polishing and see an operating mine. Rated as one of the top zoos in the world, the Pretoria Zoo (officially named the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa) it a top choice for anyone with kids looking for a fund day out, with a bit of education thrown in.
